Setting:
The Assassin's Creed universe is a, uh. Convoluted one, so let's all strap ourselves in while I get to trying to explain this nonsense.
Assassins
The Assassin Order has existed in many forms for millennia, with a documented history going back about 2000 years and known Assassins as far back as the 5th century BCE. Born of a belief that all people have the right to freedom from oppression of any kind, it would seem that the first Assassins (by any other name) were Adam and Eve and the humans they led to freedom from the oppressive and controlling reign of the Precursors (I'll get to them later,) around 75k BCE. The combination of this and a catastrophe that all but wiped out both humanity and the First Civilisation allowed humanity to flourish unabated.
It's impossible to say how the Assassin order existed or when exactly it was codified into an actual Order, as there's about 74500 years between Eve's election as leader of the human rebellion and Darius' assassination of Xerxes I - the first recorded act of an Assassin - but across this expanse of time their goals somehow appear to have stayed the same.
The central tenet of the Assassins is their belief in the importance of freedom from control for all people, believing this will pave the way towards peace for mankind.
Though the great threat against freedom in Eve's time was the First Civilisation, dictators and tyrants rose up amongst humanity in time, and the Order adapted in its way. The Brotherhood as it exists in Connor's time is most influenced by Altaïr and the Levantine Brotherhood, believing in a necessity of secrecy and subterfuge. Though they're no strangers to espionage and community outreach, they're not called Assassins for no reason, their most effective method of altering the status quo being political assassinations - cutting it off at the head, as it were.
The eponymous Creed is something all Assassins are expected to abide by at all times - that one must never kill an innocent or compromise the brotherhood, and to remember that hiding in plain sight is the most effective means of remaining unseen - and straying from the Creed has historically been punishable by death with few exceptions.

What an expert segue, you said? Why thank you, if I remembered to delete the incoherent capslock that came before this then I most definitely agree that it is an excellent segue.
Moving on.
On the dark side of the coin to the Assassins is the Templars, allegedly born when Cain killed Abel for his piece of Eden, there's only a generation's difference between the two. Which, over the course of 75,000 years, is a negligible age difference.
Like the Assassins, there's no way to know how they came to form as an order, as there's no evidence of any activity between Cain's betrayal and their support of Darius I and Xerxes I. It's fair to assume, though, that their ultimate goal and broader methodology has always aligned with that of the Assassins - world peace.
Where they differ the most on this topic is the means by which world peace is to be achieved.
While the Assassins value the pursuit of freedom and believe liberation from control will lead ultimately to peace, the Templars view this as naiveté. Their belief is that humanity needs to be controlled and lead in order to prosper. This is the point of contention between the two factions, leading to a secret war between the two, lasting for what I'll call "a long-ass period of time." This is likely compounded by the fact that - despite the Templars abiding by a set of rules similar to that of the Assassins - their desire for control and casual disregard for the wants of the people means it's not unlikely for them to have a higher concentration of... unsavoury individuals amongst their ranks.
Oh, not to mention their unwavering dedication to wiping out the Assassins since the Assassin Order is their largest obstacle and the most significant threat to their own existence. That probably contributed a fair bit.
The First Civilisation

Evolution? Get out of this class, you fail and I've had enough of your science here. I'll be writing to your parents.
In the AC universe, humanity was created by an unnamed race referred to alternately as the Precursors, Those Who Came Before and The First Civilization. (Strictly speaking, they're not aliens either. Having been the products of evolution themselves and thus, native to Earth.)
Significantly more advanced than humanity has even begun to approach in the 75k years since their near-extinction, they created humanity to be a docile workforce. Fashioned in their image, humanity was designed to be strong and to survive though never intended to be wise. They kept humans in line via orbs - known to future generations as Apples of Eden - that interacted with neurotransmitters and ensured complete obedience.
Unfortunately as time passed some humans were born without these neurotransmitters - later theorised to be because of interbreeding between humans and the precursors, which raises significant ethical concerns if you think on it for longer than a moment - and these humans begun to question their overlords. After the theft of an Apple, full-scale war broke out, with great casualties owing to the sheer numbers humanity had in their favour.
This blinded almost all of them to an imminent disaster, a coronal mass ejection that thinned humanities ranks to a mere 10,000 and all but entirely wiped out the First Civilization to a degree that they were unable to survive long after the catastrophe. Knowing they'd be unable to prevent the disaster, but also knowing that another one was coming in the far future, they were able to do some stuff with probability to predict the likely course of humanity and leave messages out in the world to be discovered by the right people in order to nudge things in the right direction. (Leaving a message for Ezio knowing it would be seen through his eyes by Desmond, for instance.)
There's also some messy business with Juno being angry at the humans and storing her conciousness away in order to be "reborn" and re-enslave the world and whatnot. But we'll just, ah. Let's table that for now.

So basically, take everything significant that happened in the 15 year period surrounding the American Revolution and stick this asshole in the middle of it.
More seriously, everything listed previously is varying degrees of peripheral information to Connor's life.
Connor's world and the one experienced by Desmond via the Animus is pretty closely aligned
Personality:
Connor's life has essentially been a 27 year trial by fire, one that has shaped him into someone who is noble and forthright, (if at times petulant and arrogant,) who takes to the Assassin cause - partially out of a thirst for revenge, but largely out of a desire to protect his people and a deep belief in the right to freedom for all people.
In his heart, Connor is an idealist. It's something that gets him called naive a lot, and in some ways that wouldn't be wrong. Especially as a child leaving his home for the first time, there's a lot about the way the cities operate that he doesn't understand. His belief in honesty and the equality of all people leaves him confused as to why Achilles encourages him to try and pass for Spanish rather than Native (and why both of those are "better" than being black,) and why he can't just tell the truth when framed for the murder a guard. These layers of naivete are stripped away as he gains a more sophisticated understanding of the world, but his optimism never quite leaves him entirely. This and a distaste for killing often lead him to try and find other solutions to problems - attempting to sabotage
In his youth, it's relatively easy to see the qualities that made him a skilled Assassin and helped him to build the Homestead. After his mother's death, he pushed himself to be stronger and better becoming incredibly adept at tracking, hunting and climbing.
Connor is possessed of a deep respect for all life - which can be seen in the way he thanks the animals he hunts before he skins them, and his deep distaste for killing other people. Early in his tenure as an Assassin, he attempts to sabotage the efforts of those who would threaten his people, and is reluctant to accept the idea that he may have to kill his father - hoping somewhat that in working together, he can bring Haytham around to his line of thinking. (Let's not think on this too hard when considering that at least half of the gameplay in this game is comprised of slaughtering redcoats who are just doing their jobs.)
This also speaks of another flaw in Connor's outlook. Though humble of the far-reaching effect of his actions, (he frequently downplays his role in aiding the revolution, attributing things that realistically wouldn't have happened without him to the people instead,) he is also incredibly arrogant and stubborn. When asked by Aveline how he knows he's doing the right thing, he comments that he trusts his own hands. It's important to him to never doubt himself and to always trust his own judgement, which is... They're valuable qualities in an Assassin, especially one working with so few others and takes on the responsibility of rebuilding the Brotherhood in the colonies. But this isn't a quality in him that's developed as he's become more skilled so much as one that has been challenged. In his village he was outstanding - having pushed himself to be better and stronger since his mother's death - but with people like Achilles and Haytham, he's still a naive kid who doesn't yet have the experience to fully understand the world or the current situation. Because of his confidence, well. His arrogance, let's not mince words, in his skills and his beliefs that he knows best what the correct course of action is

Assassins that operate in the more traditional manner, (that is to say, murdering the shit out of everyone all the time,) have historically tended to be walking arsenals. As such, aside from the clothes on his back, Connor will be coming equipped with;
- A pair of hidden blades housed in wristguards. They seem to be unique in that he's able to remove the blades from their housing in order to wield them more like daggers.
- A bow, quiver and 10 arrows
- A pair of flintlock pistols with 20 bullets and powder.
- A Tomahawk with a blade fashioned in the shape of the Assassin symbol.
- A heavy war club
- 5 rope darts
- Bait and 3 animal snares
- 3 smoke bombs
- A shard of Eden; a ring which creates an electromagnetic shield, protecting the wearer from projectile damage and energy-based weapons. It's not perfect - in practice it reduces the likelihood of being hit by gunfire about 50% - but I can tell you for a fact it has absolutely saved Connor's ass on occasion.
(I'm aware that this is a frankly ludicrous amount of things for one person to be carrying, and so I'm happy to cut the list down some if that would be preferable.)
